Shirley Ann Colvin Thompson, age 79, passed away on Thursday, May 25, 2023, surrounded by her loving family at home under hospice care, after a brief battle with lung cancer. Mrs. Shirley grew up in Curve, the only girl of eight children to parents Ben and Hazel Colvin. She attended Curve School, where one day in 3rd grade, she saw “Johnny” playing on the playground and told her friends “I’m going to marry that boy over there.” She and John were married on June 24, 1964. She worked at Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company in the 1960s, and at Master Casual Wear in Ripley for 25 years, until she retired. In her retirement, Mrs. Shirley became a homebody. She loved shopping, whether it was in the store, or from the comfort of her home. Shoes, clothes, purses, you name it; she’d get settled into her chair in the living room and watch HSN, QVC, JTV, and even the occasional soap opera. She always had a pot of coffee and an open seat at her table ready for anyone who came ringing her back porch doorbell (because if you knocked, or came to any other door, you didn’t “know” her and she wasn’t going to let you in!) She was a taxi driver to all of her grandchildren, picking them up from school, taking them home after ball games and band practices, going out for ice cream and after school snacks, and was only a phone call away if they ever missed the bus. Yard sales, helping pick up pecans, having birthday parties, swimming, camping, “Pretty Club” meetings, sledding in the winter, rolling in the grass in summer, and watching Granny stand on the back porch, aiming her shotgun at a snake out in the yard – so many precious memories were made on the hill there in Curve, and we will carry those with us always. Whether you called her Shirley, Momma, Sis, or Granny, having her in your life was truly special, and she will be missed dearly. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, John M. Thompson; her parents, Lewis Ben Colvin, Sr. and Hazel Goodwin Colvin, and three brothers, Thomas Earl Colvin, Lewis Ben Colvin, Jr., and Jeffrey Colvin. She is survived by two children, Marion Thompson Davis, and John “Bubba” (Sandy) Thompson; six grandchildren, Logan (Ryan) Davis, Madison (Corey) Crihfield, John Hayden Thompson, John Landry Thompson, Tyler (Stephanie) Bolton, and Alyssa Rice; eight great-grandchildren, Ronan, Lyra, Emrys, Rhydian, Freyja, Kinsley, Oliver, and Bentley, and four brothers, W. R. “Bud” Colvin, Roy Lynn Colvin, Jerry Colvin, and Gwen Colvin. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., on Wednesday May 31, at Covington Funeral Home. Interment will follow the service in Ripley Memorial Gardens, where she will be laid to rest beside her husband. Visitation for friends and family will be held the evening prior, on Tuesday, at the funeral home from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m.
