Melia Kilby Garey

March 30, 1957 — August 13, 2024

It is with the deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of Melia Kilby Garey, on August 13, 2024, in Rosemark, TN. While we are heartbroken to say goodbye here on earth, we rejoice knowing she is now in the arms of Jesus, whom she loved so dearly.

Born on March 30, 1957 in Hot Springs, Arkansas, Melia lived a life marked by her unwavering faith in Christ, her love for her husband of 43 years, Bart, and her devotion to her children, their spouses, and her granddaughters. These were the cornerstones of her life, and she approached each day with a positive outlook and a smile that could light up any room. She had a laugh that came easily and was a true friend to many, always ready with a kind word or a helping hand. Her life was a testament to the power of love, faith, and kindness.

Growing up, Melia was an active member of Oaklawn Missionary Baptist Church in Hot Springs. It was during that time that Melia grew to know Christ and as a teenager dedicated her life to the Lord. A graduate of Hot Springs High School, Melia was a proud member of her school’s T-steppers squad. Melia received both her undergraduate and masters from the University of Central Arkansas. While at UCA, she was a member of Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority and 1978 Homecoming Queen.

Melia was a devoted member of First Baptist Church Millington. Her faith played a central role in her life, guiding her actions and inspiring those around her. She was deeply involved in her community, making a difference through her volunteer work with Crosslink Memphis and Young Life.

Melia's greatest pride and joy was her family. She was the loving wife of Bart Garey, and together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support. She was the cherished mother of Leah Garey (Tom Walthousen), Will Garey, Natalie (Joel) Lawrence, and Hannah (Brad) Bondurant. One of Melia's greatest joys in life was being a grandmother, or "Mia," as she was affectionately called by her granddaughters, Nora and Noel Lawrence. She adored them and took every opportunity to dote on them, finding immense joy in their presence and celebrating every milestone. She absolutely adored spending time with them, finding pure delight in their laughter and little moments together. They brought a special kind of joy to her life that she treasured deeply. They were the light of her life, and her love for them knew no bounds.

She is also survived by her brother, Gary (Debbie) Kilby, as well as several in-laws, nieces, and nephews, all of whom were deeply loved by her.  Melia was welcomed at Heaven’s gates by her parents, Von and Betty Kilby and mother-in-law, Marilyn Garey.

Melia will be remembered for her warm smile, her caring nature, and her ability to make everyone feel special. Her life and legacy will continue to inspire and bring others closer to Jesus, just as she did in life.

The family invites you to join them as they celebrate the beautiful life of Melia Kilby Garey on Saturday, August 24th at 12 pm, at Millington First Baptist Church, followed by a graveside service at Memorial Park Cemetery in East Memphis. The visitation for friends and family will be held Friday, August 23rd, at Millington First Baptist Church from 5pm until 8pm.

Melia loved flowers, so if you would like to send flowers, please send them to Millington First Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to one of the two ministries close to her heart, The Liquid Legacy or Crosslink Memphis.
