George W. Smith, 87, of Brighton, passed away on Monday, November 25 at his home surrounded by his family.
Mr. Smith was a retired machinist, an Air Force Reserve veteran and served his community as an alderman for the City of Brighton for eight years. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved hiking, fishing and camping. He also loved tending to his garden. Whittling was a lifelong hobby and he was whittling in his carport up until just a few weeks ago. Whittling was such an early passion, that he got in trouble in high school for whittling on his desk!
He is survived by his wife of over 65 years, Catherine Anita Johnson Smith, whom he met in a cotton field picking cotton; two daughters, Teresa Leigh (Jerry) Fiveash and Christie Lynn (Alan) White; one son, George Brian (Cindy) Smith and his grandchildren, Blake Fiveash, Jared Fiveash, Aaron Smith, Brianna Smith, John Marbry and Whitney Marbry Mason and numerous great grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mr. Smith will be private.
