Leroy Griffin, 82, passed away Saturday, August 20, at his cherished home and farm in Brighton. He was born July 22, 1940 to the late Tom and Elizabeth (McBride) Griffin in Lexington, Mississippi. He and his family later moved to Brighton in 1944. Leroy worked as a material manager for ESB /Exide battery until the company’s closure in 1982, but spent most of his life self-employed as a livestock farmer. He loved his family and provided protection and stability that will be sorely missed. He loved to socialize and never met a stranger. For the past 20 years, you could find him almost every morning at Uncle Sam’s Old Country Store in Brighton, where he made many friends, drank many cups of coffee and as the old saying goes, “shot a lot of bull.” At home, he loved to talk on the phone, watch old westerns, and “The Price Is Right,” and he never missed “The Wheel of Fortune.” He is survived by his daughter, Sherry Griffin, of Brighton; his son, Keith Griffin, of Brighton; one granddaughter, Murphy (Josh) Durkee, of Munford; one grandson, Tyler Griffin, of Brighton; one step-granddaughter, Allie Brisentine, of Germantown; one step-grandson, J.D. Brisentine, of Bartlett; three great-grandchildren, Griffin Durkee, Owen Durkee and Cannon Durkee, all of Munford; one special friend, Beauton Matthews, of Ripley, and special neighbors, Laura Smith and Gracie Talley, who all helped care for him. In addition to his parents, he was proceeded in death by his wife of 46 years, Bettye Murphy Griffin; his two brothers, Kenneth Foster and Earl D. Griffin; his nephew, Donald Foster, and his daughter in-law, Paige Richardson Griffin. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm on Friday, August 26 at the Covington Funeral Home chapel with interment to follow in Morrison’s Memorial Cemetery in Brighton. The family will receive friends from 6 pm until 8 pm on Thursday, August 25 at the funeral home.
