Brighton

Betty Malone, 87, of Brighton, passed away on Monday, October 9 at Baptist Hospital – Desoto after a brief illness.  

Betty was a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church for 70 years and a very Christian lady and wife as described in Proverbs 31.  She was a retired school teacher having taught at Brighton Elementary School for 36 years.  Betty loved her flower gardens, cooking and making homemade butter pecan ice cream.  She supported and helped her husband, Joe, at their dairy farm and in their off time, they loved to crappie fish together.  

She is survived by her daughter, Melanie Malone of Brighton; her daughter-in-law, Missy Malone; four grandchildren, Mason Malone, Ryan Malone, Breanna Malone and Kaden Malone and her niece and running buddy, Wilma Walk.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Will and Willie Thompson Gatlin; her husband, Joe Malone; her son, Brett Malone and her siblings, Mabel Beatrice Wiley, William Lawrence Gatlin, Edward Forrest Gatlin, Marion Sanford Gatlin, Frances Marie Slover, Dorothy Allene Blackmon and Martha Jean Wilson.  

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 14 at the Covington Funeral Home chapel with interment to follow in the Clopton Cemetery.  The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service.
